Vets are being warned to be on their guard after a counterfeit vial of Metacam, marketed in the UK by Boehringer Ingelheim, was found.

Metacam 20mg/ml solution for injection for cattle, pigs and horses is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat common inflammatory conditions in cattle, pigs and horses and for the control of postoperative pain in dehorned calves.

Boehringer Ingelheim, the marketing authorisation holder of the genuine product, is asking any vets with suspicions about packs of Metacam to call 01344 746957 or email

The company said the counterfeit vial had a poor copy of the label, was made from a different type of glass, stopper and crimp-on cap and carried false batch number and expiry date information.

It said it was reminding vets and farmers they should buy Metacam only from known and trusted sources.
