Nearly 500 veterinary nurses have been removed from the RCVS VN register and list for failing to pay retention fees, despite an extended payment deadline.
The deadline for payment was November 1, 2013, although fees were accepted until December 31.
The number of removals is down on last year, with 492 nurses losing their listed/registered status at the start of 2014, compared to 625 who were removed in 2013.
An RCVS spokesman said: “Although the RCVS has written to the VNs who have been removed, it is likely some of these nurses have not kept the RCVS informed about changes to their addresses.
“Consequently, these VNs may not receive the letters and may not have received the previous fee reminders sent by the college. Others may have chosen not to renew their fees voluntarily – due to a change in circumstances for example.”
He added: “Employers are encouraged to check the VNs they employ remain on the list/register, as those who are not listed or registered are not legally permitted to carry out minor surgery or medical treatment under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966.”
