New research from nutritional experts at Purina shows that 36% of cat owners are concerned about their pet putting on weight and becoming lazy and lethargic after being neutered.
New research from nutritional experts at Purina has revealed that 36% of cat owners are concerned about their pet putting on weight and becoming lazy and lethargic after being neutered.
However, despite the availability of life-stage diets and owners being more receptive to advice when their pet is a kitten, only 5% of cat owners switch to a specialist diet after their cat has been neutered, highlighting a missed opportunity.
The research also revealed that a further:
- 75% of pet owners would welcome advice from their vet on their pet’s nutrition, and
- 86% would be willing to switch their cat’s diet if it would help benefit their overall health
With this in mind, Purina has launched a new flavour of its Pro Plan Sterilised Cat diet, which can be offered from six months of age (introduced gradually after neutering). The new turkey flavour will sit alongside the existing salmon flavour.
Pro Plan Sterilised Cat contains Optirenal, a unique formulation which promotes healthy kidneys. It helps to limit the risk of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) and contains all the essential nutrients including vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids in a high protein, low fat diet.
Esther Rawlinson, veterinary affairs manager at Purina, said: “Neutering cats reduces their energy needs by 24-33% and they may get an increased feeling of hunger. By advising the owner to feed a diet with higher protein levels, veterinary professionals can help the cat maintain a lean body shape, and help keep them looking fit and healthy.”
