The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have opened ZSL London Zoo’s new Land of the Lions exhibit.
The royals toured the exhibit and spent time talking to staff about the interactive experiences it will offer visitors.
Lionesses Indi, Rubi and Heidi also showed their respect for the royal guests, coming within a whisker of the Queen and the duke in the exhibit’s 360⁰ temple clearing.
Director general Ralph Armond said: “The Queen opened our previous lion enclosure 40 years ago and it was an honour to have her return with the duke in the year of her 90th birthday.”
The £5.2 million Land of the Lions development will transport visitors from London to Sasan Gir in Gujarat, India – the last remaining stronghold of Asiatic lions – and bring visitors closer than ever to the big cats.
