The anthelmintic is authorised for the treatment and control of gastrointestinal nematode infections and associated diseases of sheep.

This means the anthelmintic can now be prescribed by pharmacists and suitably qualified persons (SQPs) as well as vets from 1 July 2017. A request to change the classification had been made by the Marketing Authorisation Holder.

Strategic worm control

A VMD statement said: “Increasing the availability of this anthelmintic will help it to be incorporated into strategic worm control programmes on farms in line with best practice guidance on worm control.

“This could result in long-term health benefits for sheep, for example, by reducing the development and spread of anthelmintic resistance, thereby prolonging the effective use of anthelmintics.”

‘Additional training’

The statement continued: “SQPs will have additional training to ensure they are sufficiently familiar with Zolvix and how to prescribe it effectively and responsibly so that it is used appropriately.

“A new compulsory training module will be implemented by The Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority (AMTRA) to augment the skills of all AMTRA-registered SQPs permitted to prescribe farm animal products. New SQPs will be required to undertake a revised and extended module before gaining their farm animal registration with AMTRA.”

Yet another situation where VMD has caved to commercial pressure and increased the likelihood of irresponsible use of wormers. So disappointed.

We put in a huge amount of work into teaching clients how and when to use this drug, and this move seems to undermine all the principles that Zolvix has been marketed alongside since it came out. I actually had a sheep farmer describe this announcement to me as ‘a disaster’ earlier today, and they are absolutely right.

“SQP’s should not be able to prescribe drugs, it is in the remit of Veterinary Surgeons only.
