An alliance of pet food manufacturers is gearing up to run a pet obesity campaign.

The PFMA is launching a new campaign to educate owners about pet obesityThe Pet Food Manufacturers Association’s (PFMA) Friends for Life drive will take place throughout May 2013. The campaign will encourage owners to get their pet weighed every week, as part of “weigh-in Wednesday” sessions held at local vet surgeries or pet retailers.

A PFMA spokesman told Vetsonline: “This nationwide campaign will provide all the necessary tools to educate on good nutrition, responsible feeding and wellbeing to improve longevity of their pets.

“For example, for consumers we will be sending out pet “size-o-meters”, so they can compare their pet with the size it should be, which is a lovely tool for pet owners to use so they can work on their pet’s weight loss at home.”

The PFMA will shortly be uploading Friends for Life literature and tools for owners online, as well as information for veterinary practices wanting to get involved in the campaign.
