A veterinary group has launched a Christmas appeal for the first time to help animals in need this festive season.
Willows Veterinary Group in Cheshire has launched the Willows Pawsome Pets Christmas appeal to help as many abandoned, unwanted and unloved animals as possible via donations of new food, toys and blankets, which can be dropped off at any of Willows’ surgeries until 18 December.
The gifts will then be distributed to various animal rescue charities across the Wirral, Cheshire and Manchester region.
Dogs’ home visit
Willows marketing manager David Crane was inspired to start the appeal following a visit to Manchester and Cheshire Dogs’ Home.
Mr Crane said: “When I visited, I found it hard to walk around and see all the little eyes looking up at me and knowing there’s no way I could take all of them home, and I felt we were in a position to do even more this Christmas by launching this appeal.
“We have a lot of loving pet owners who visit us and we know how much they care about animals, so we are urging anyone to bring in new pet food, supplies, blankets and toys for all different creatures, and we will make sure they find the right home.
“We have only just launched the appeal and have already had a message on Facebook asking whether someone can deliver direct to us from Amazon, so that gives you the measure of the generosity of our clients.”
It was at the home that Mr Crane met a partially sighted Shar Pei called Ruby and a Staffordshire bull terrier-cross named Ellie – both long-term residents that had arrived separately as strays, but that have since bonded.
Ruby arrived with a catalogue of ailments, including a condition called entropion, which meant her eyelids and eyelashes grew inwards.
Despite various operations, she remains partially sighted and relies on Ellie to find her way round.
Home assistant Will Featonby said: “They have two beds in the kennel, but always cuddle up together in one of them at night. They have both spent several Christmases with us now and nothing would please me more than to see them in a new home.
“In the meantime, charitable appeals, such as the Willows Pawsome Pets Christmas appeal, make all the difference to us at what is a very busy time of year.
“It helps raise awareness of what we do and we can’t thank Willows enough for helping us in this way.”
