The technical director of the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA), Charles Mason, has received the Robin Irish Award from the Association of Meat Inspectors (AMI).

The award is made annually in memory of AMI founding member Robin Irish for outstanding contribution to the association. It was presented by AMI president Archie Anderson at its 48th annual seminar held at Harper Adams University College. The seminar was the 26th attended by Mr Mason and the seventh at which he has presented a paper.

The HSA is an independent charity that promotes scientific, technical and educational advances towards improving the welfare of food animals worldwide at slaughter, killing, marketing and transport.

Its specialist technical staff provide expert and practical advice on all welfare issues relating to food animals.

Its work includes researching, refining and demonstrating humane slaughter methods, publishing material such as guidelines, best practice, books and videos, funding research projects and developing equipment.
