Veterinary Physiotherapy: An introduction

Do you want to do more in practice to help your geriatric patients with the daily struggles associated with osteoarthritis? With a prevalence of *20% in adult dogs and 80% in geriatric dogs, and similar figures for cats, a large amount of patients coming through your practice will be suffering with osteoarthritis to some degree.

Geriatric dogs and their owners often get stuck in a negative cycle. We have all seen it, joints become painful and the dog becomes reluctant to exercise as much. The owner feels mean so takes the dog out less. The dog becomes weaker and puts on weight. To add to painful joints, we now have lack of supporting muscle, soft tissue damage, and extra pounds to lift. The dog becomes more reluctant to exercise and so the cycle continues.

Cat owners notice changes such as increased sleeping, lack of ability to jump and move as before, and a reduction in grooming; and cats will suffer this same cycle of arthritic change.

Joints that are not used to their full range deteriorate, as do the soft tissues around them. It is a downward spiral. Integration of some daily techniques and exercises can break this cycle and greatly improve quality of life and mobility for these pets.

This course will teach you the basics of rehabilitation for the geriatric patient and enable you to set up clinics to help owners help their pets.

By the end of this module, successful candidates will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the pathophysiological changes that occur during the downward spiral that many geriatric pets face
  • Be able to carry out and demonstrate simple techniques and exercises to help the geriatric patient
  • Have a clear idea how to set up a clinic for their geriatric patients with mobility issues
