Stallion Reproduction & Breeding Management
This one-day course is aimed at clinicians with an interest in equine stud medicine and for those veterinary surgeons working towards an RCVS CertAVP. The course will focus on the core competencies necessary for successful stallion breeding management as well as introducing some of the new advances made in this field.
The day will be divided into lectures, practical demonstrations and “hands on” training opportunities as well as small group case based discussions with personnel and veterinary surgeons experienced in stallion breeding management.
The lectures will cover topics including breeding soundness evaluation, semen collection, evaluation and handling and investigation of the sub fertile stallion. Semen collection will focus on collection in the normal horse as well as considering the difficult and problem cases. Semen handling will look in detail at handling and thawing of frozen semen and evaluation of semen samples. There will also be a short session on guiding clinicians through the pitfalls of paperwork associated with certification and semen import.
After the morning lectures there will be practical afternoon sessions where delegates are able to gain hands on experience with breeding soundness examination, testicular ultrasonography, step by step demonstrations of semen collection and the correct way to approach handling and thawing of frozen semen. The day will be concluded with small group case based discussion where delegates will have the opportunity to approach individual case examples and put in to practice what they have learnt throughout the day.
