This two day workshop has been developed to deliver a hands-on practical course for cattle vets, providing a comprehensive course in the practical delivery of joined up herd health, including benchmarking. The course will combine a review of real farm data prior to the on-farm herd health visit with observational data collected at the time of the visit. An evening workshop will also cover use of herd health management tools. The course is ideal for those studying for CertAVP(cattle) as well as for those wanting a practical course in herd health and welfare.

Topics covered:

  • On farm practical herd health review of;
  • Feed and nutrition including forage assessment
  • Mastitis including parlour visit
  • Youngstock including building design and ventilation
  • Lameness including mobility scoring
  • Fertility including review of data with Interherd+, TotalVet and DairyComp 305
  • Herd health planning techniques; including ‘measure, manage, monitor’ principles
  • Examples of dairy herd health planning with case discussion and the opportunity to present advice back to the herd manager
  • Introduction of farm economics and cost benefits with the use of partial budgets
  • Communication skills and motivation: achieving change on farm
  • Farm assurance, context of health planning and the role of the farm veterinary surgeon in sustainable food production
  • Welfare assessment and legislation; including on-farm welfare assessments (with an AssureWel trainer)
