About this course

A 6 part series, Shailen Jasani  will cover some key emergency medicine topics with particular emphasis on the essential role of the veterinary nurse. The course will start with a discussion of how to triage the emergency patient, the indications and appropriate use of fluid therapy, and the importance of pain management and providing a multimodal approach to analgesia. Finally the course will foray into canine and feline poisoning before ending with a classic small animal emergency – the blocked cat!

Topics to be covered include:

-Assessment of emergency patients – major body system examination (triage)

– Differences between hypovolaemia and dehydration

– Different types of parenteral fluids and their appropriate use

– Pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management

– Poisons: telephone communication, general approach and management of specific poisons

– Blocked cats
