Movement of dogs and cats between countries is increasing as owners take pets on holiday, rescue stray animals and buy imported puppies. As a consequence, infectious diseases that were previously considered isolated regional diseases are increasingly being diagnosed, often mimicking immune mediated diseases and presenting a diagnostic challenge. Improved diagnostic methods have revealed new pathogens and unveiled diseases that were previously thought non-infectious. Old infectious diseases are re-emerging due to genetic variations, poor vaccination compliance and inappropriate use of antibiotics leading to resistant pathogens. This course will focus on some of the more challenging cases that you may encounter.

What you’ll learn:

  • What are the emerging pathogens and how do they present?
  • Laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases
  • Pet Travel Scheme – becoming familiar with ‘exotic diseases’
  • Responsible use of antibiotics – what impact are we having on the emergence of antibactarial resistance
