Vet nurses are being asked to help develop a website that offers advice to the veterinary profession on a range of problems, including mental health, financial issues, addiction and working relationships.

The Vetlife website was launched two years ago by the Vetlife Steering Committee which is comprised of representatives from a number of UK veterinary organisations, including the VNC and BVNA.

Dot CreightonRVN Dot Creighton, RCVS VN Council vice-chairman and member of the Vetlife Steering Committee, said: “It is clear that there is a real need to support the mental wellbeing of veterinary nurses. One way that we are trying to do this is through the Vetlife website, [which] has been developed to provide an initial location on the web where colleagues experiencing a range of problems can go for advice.

“The site has proved to be a popular resource with over 1,000 visitors in March 2010. This level of use and the fact that the vast majority of visitors to the site are visiting the stress, depression and employment pages probably reflects the significance of these stressors to our colleagues in the profession.”

With this in mind, the Vetlife Steering Committee is now looking to solicit the assistance of veterinary nurses to help further develop the site and ensure that it reflects the real needs of VNs in practice.

As part of this consultative process, the steering group is planning to host a small focus group meeting with veterinary nurses on the evening of May 26 (7-9 pm) in Mansfield Street, London W1 (near to Oxford Circus).

If you live in the London area and are prepared to give an evening of your time to contribute to this group, please contact Vanessa Kearns. Refreshments will be available and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Alternatively, you could also help by emailing in any views and suggestions that you might have about the website.
