UK vets are being offered the chance to sign up to an innovative practice-specific veterinary helpline that claims to earn them money while relieving the burden of sifting calls from pet owners at any time of the day or night.

PHS-DirectModelled on the NHS Direct concept, PHS-Direct has been launched by pet care company Animals at Home (AAH). It offers a 24-hour, year-round, triage service staffed by vets and fully qualified, registered veterinary nurses. Callers access the service via a premium rate telephone line – and veterinary practices who join the scheme will each have their own dedicated helpline number.

AAH company director Denis Chirgwin said: “The helpline’s availability out-of-hours means less distraction and fewer disturbed nights for on-duty vets from ‘unnecessary’ calls while ensuring an appropriate escalation, if needed, to the caller’s veterinary emergency service.

“The service will provide new clients for practices (when a caller in their area is not registered with an existing practice) and will equip vets with a practice-specific telephone number. We are also offering a financial bonus – the practice will profit from every call.

He concluded: “Animals at Home is currently discussing with veterinary practices throughout the country an offer to provide PHS-Direct to them and their clients with these built-in benefits.”
