The Associations of Veterinarians in Industry (AVI) used its winter meeting and annual meeting in November to mark the retirement of a long-serving member who has devoted more than 30 years to both the association and the pharmaceutical industry.

Peter Watson, a University of Cambridge 1975 graduate, spent a brief spell in practice before devoting the majority of his time to the pharmaceutical industry, initially as an employee and latterly as an independent consultant. He has been a long-standing member of AVI and has served on its committee in a variety of capacities including treasurer, secretary, membership secretary and chairman.
To mark his contribution, he was awarded a lifetime honorary membership of the association by chairman Veena Singh at AVI’s meeting.
Ms Singh said Mr Watson would be “greatly missed” by the AVI committee, “where his wit and wisdom has contributed to the achievement of many AVI goals over the past 30 years”.
“During my own 10 years on the committee, Peter’s support, guidance, and his willingness to share his wealth of experience, has been invaluable,” she said. “On behalf of the AVI I would like to wish him all the very best in his retirement and am very pleased to be able to reward his contributions with lifetime honorary membership of the AVI.”
Mr Watson said: “The changes in the animal health and pharmaceutical industry during my time with AVI have been many, although I have been lucky to escape mostly unscathed from mergers, acquisitions and so on. Membership of the AVI has been an asset to many who have lived through more troubled times.
“Following my decision to retire from the EU and go back to enjoying reading Franz Kafka novels rather than being a character in them, I hope to travel to the Antipodes, and spend more time following other neglected interests.
“May I thank all my colleagues over my 35 years in industry for their support and advice and the AVI Committee for awarding me honorary membership of the association; I wish all of you well for the future.”
