The VBF has been established for more than 100 years and is run by volunteers from the profession to support colleagues in difficulty, including financial problems.

VBF president Lydia Brown said: “We are so grateful to the students involved who organised this off their own backs even though they don’t have much free time. It augurs well for the future of the profession that they want to support their colleagues. I do hope they all make it back to Nottingham safely and I look forward to seeing the pictures on”

Tom McKay, one of the students who organised the challenge, said: “We have really enjoyed the training and are reasonably optimistic we will make it back for our Easter placements!”
