The Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons’ (AVSTS) autumn meeting will be held in Swindon on October 16 and 17 and will take the theme “Not the usual emergency”.

The meeting will focus on discussing management and treatment of some of the emergencies vets are faced with from time to time, but are not often discussed in detail.

The aim is to provide top quality continuing professional development at an affordable price, with the society aiming to break even.

AVSTS promises a “great list” of lecturers with prominent surgeons discussing their approach to acute thoracic disease, facial reconstructions, tracheostomies and stick injuries.  The association also has experts from other related disciplines giving an overview of some of the related topics.

This year, specialists in ophthalmology, dentistry and anaesthesia will discuss management of acute ocular trauma, dental/maxillofacial trauma and the anaesthetic implications of acute head and thoracic trauma patients.

The course dinner will be held at the conference hotel on the Friday evening, where organisers hope to provide a casino night where delegates can play (with pretend money only) roulette, blackjack and so on, with prizes for the best/luckiest delegates of the night.

A spokesman said: “AVSTS prides itself on being a very friendly organisation, with vets from primary and referral practices contributing equally to often very lively discussions during the conference. We welcome any queries and would love to see some new faces, as well as old, in Swindon in October.”
