Schmallenberg virus (SBV) infection has been identified on 145 farms. Nine of the positive cases have been diagnosed in cattle, 136 in sheep, and none to date in other species.

In addition to the rise in cases, two new counties have reported cases of the disease:

  • Leicestershire, and
  • Lincolnshire.

SBV infection has still only been identified in areas at risk of midge incursion from Northern Europe during summer / autumn 2011, according to the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA).

Veterinary staff requiring further guidance should contact their local AHVLA Laboratory (England and Wales) or SAC Disease Surveillance Centre (Scotland).
