Vet nurse Sacha Elliot has won the 2009 Pet Doctors’ Pet Slimmer Award for Vet Nurses after supporting a ten year old German Shepherd dog and his owner through a successful weight loss programme.

L-R: Bull, Tania House-Spence and Sacha ElliotMiss Elliot, from Rustington, won herself spa weekend for two at Champneys Health Resort after helping Bull, a ten year old dog from Walberton, lose seventeen kilograms – almost a quarter of his body weight – in six months. He now weighs in at a healthy 51 kilograms and beat 11 cats and 22 dogs from other Pet Doctors’ branches to win the competition.

Bull had been seriously overweight for several years despite his owner, Tania House-Spence, following instructions provided on the pet food she was feeding him. The excess weight was making him uncomfortable and putting additional strain on his joints and major organs which would only have got worse as he’d got older.

Miss Elliot encouraged Mrs House-Spence to put Bull on a diet and provided advice and support during the six months he was losing weight. He weighed in at 68 kilograms when he started and, when he was last weighed (December 16, 2009) had reduced to 51kg.

Presenting the award, Fiona Marjoram of Hill’s Pet Nutrition said: “Congratulations to Bull, Mr and Mrs House-Spence and to Sacha. This is a tremendous achievement. We had some terrific entries and it’s great to see so many of the Pet Doctors’ team helping owners to ensure their pets lead a long and healthy life. Running weight clinics can be incredibly rewarding for veterinary nurses and helps bond owners to the clinic. After all, all owners want a long and healthy life for their pet and keeping them at the correct weight is a key ingredient to ensuring this.”

Miss Elliot said: “Putting a pet on a diet can be an ordeal for many owners as they don’t like to deprive their beloved animal of their favourite food and treats. But with veterinary help and advice it’s really easier than people think and can make the world of difference to pets.  It’s also proven to increase their life expectancy. Tania did really well in sticking to the regime and Bull is reaping the benefit of her efforts.

“Compared with when I first met him in June 2009, he’s now full of energy and raring to go. It’s wonderful to see him so much better and I congratulate them both on winning the Pet Doctors’ Pet Slimmer of the Year Award.”

Pet Doctors ran the competition, sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, in all 28 of its practices across the South East of England. Bull earned the award for losing the most weight and won a year’s supply of Hill’s Pet Nutrition products. Bull’s owner, Tania House-Spence, received a Marks & Spencer hamper.

VN Claire Anderson from Pet Doctors in Newport came runner up, having entered the most pets into the competition. She won herself a spa day for two at Champneys Health Resort.
