The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons will host a free webinar on July 28 to explain changes to its guidance on 24-hour emergency care, introduced following consultations with the profession and animal owners.

Titled “24/7 emergency care – a new emphasis”, it will allow vets, vet nurses and supporting staff to remain clued-up on changes to the Code of Professional Conduct.

The webinar will be held at 8:30pm on Monday, July 28 and will be held by RCVS registrar and head of legal services, Gordon Hockey and Clare Tapsfield-Wright – former RCVS conical member and chair of the RCVS standards committee.

The new supporting guidance will now place a greater emphasis on owners’ legal responsibilities for the welfare of their animals, as well as an obligation on veterinary surgeons to provide more information to clients about their out-of-hours service.

It is hoped the guidance will assist and empower vets to decline to attend an animal away from the practice when unnecessary or unsafe. The new guidance will be published online shortly.
