Practitioners and members of the public interested in veterinary regulation can now apply to sit on the RCVS investigation and disciplinary committees.

Interested vets and lay people can now apply to join the DC and PICThe call for members comes hot on the heels of ministerial approval for the Legislative Reform Order (LRO), which was passed on January 17, 2013, and comes into force in April 2013.

The LRO means members of RCVS council will not be able to sit on the two statutory regulatory committees and the college hopes the preliminary investigation committee (PIC) and the disciplinary committee (DC) will be fully independent of council by July 2015, following a transitional period over the next two years.

The first recruitment phase is appealing for:

  • Three lay members and two veterinary surgeons to serve on the preliminary investigation committee from July 1, 2013;
  • Four lay members and four veterinary surgeons to serve on the disciplinary committee from July 1, 2013;
  •  Two veterinary surgeons to serve on the preliminary investigation committee from July 1, 2014; and
  • Three lay members and three veterinary surgeons to serve on the disciplinary committee from July 1, 2014.

RCVS president Jacqui Molyneux said: “It’s exciting that we can now seek to appoint non-council members to the two committees involved in our disciplinary system – a breakthrough that has taken a long time to achieve.”

She added: “We are interested to hear from veterinary surgeons and lay people who are keen to contribute to the public good and support us in our regulatory role. It’s an excellent opportunity to be part of the next chapter of the RCVS, as we become a more modern and effective regulator.”
