BSAVA president Grant Petrie officially welcomed delegates to the 54th BSAVA Congress in Birmingham earlier today, promising them “an amazing scientific programme, a diverse commercial exhibition and stunning social events”.
Speaking prior to the BSAVA Awards ceremony, hosted by the BBC’s Katie Rowlett, Mr Petrie assured delegates that they would not be disappointed, claiming that the event’s four-day scientific and social programme “will be nothing short of outstanding“.
Mr Petrie claimed that BSAVA Congress totally embodies the BSAVA mission statement – namely to promote excellence in small animal practice through education and science.
He told delegates: “The core of congress is, of course, the education and science, which, in my opinion, is unrivalled.
“This year, there are over 40 streams with more than 250 lectures brought to you by speakers who have earned a reputation as experts. We have invited 25 speakers from overseas to provide a truly international input to the sessions.
“The lectures have been organised to meet the needs of vets and nurses at every stage of their career – there’s a mix of general and advanced lectures, veterinary masterclasses, interactive seminars and a nurses’ master series.”
Mr Petrie also recognised that congress content had become “increasingly attractive to non-English speaking delegates” and announced that, for the first time, a stream of lectures would run in Hall 1 each day, with simultaneous translation into both Polish and Spanish.
“The range of topics is, as ever, diverse and innovative,” he said, before highlighting elements of the forthcoming sessions, which include a “controversies” stream, interactive seminars, clinical research abstracts and the BSAVA lecture – delivered this year by popular TV presenter Monty Halls.
Summing up, he said: “We have an amazing scientific programme, a diverse commercial exhibition and stunning social events – brought to you by a talented Woodrow House Team and some truly exceptional volunteers.”
