A leading industry levy board has published new figures on the growing impact and incidence of pleurisy in UK pigs.

BPEX has produced new facts and igures on pig pleurisyAccording to BPEX, which represents pig levy payers in England, the condition is now costing producers approximately 75p per animal in processing costs and the incidence of disease is increasing.

A BPEX spokesman said: “Pleurisy also stunts the growth and performance of pigs and BPEX estimates the total cost could be as high as £3.72 for each pig slaughtered, for a typical batch where 10% of pigs have pleurisy.

“This worrying trend has been detected in both BPEX Pig Health Scheme and Collection and Communication of Inspection Results reports and abattoirs are reporting up to 15% of the kill being severely affected.”

The new pleurisy factsheet – Action for Productivity no.28 – is available via the BPEX website.
