Nearly 30% of UK dog owners say their dogs are unable to take their prescription medications in one sitting, according to results of a new survey that highlights issues associated with pets rejecting their medication.

pillThe Harris Interactive survey, conducted online from August 2-9, 2012, was sponsored by Abbott Animal Health to help raise awareness of the importance of ensuring that dogs receive the proper dose of their medications.

Of the 500 dog owners surveyed, who each have a pet taking medication for a chronic health condition, specific concerns revealed:

  • 29% say their pet is unable to take their medication in one sitting (of which, 49% said their top concern when their dog rejects its medication is that their pet is not getting all the medication needed).
  • 34% expressed concern that their dog might be in pain because it is not receiving a full dose of its pain medication.

European specialist in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia Matthew Gurney said: “For the first time, this survey gives us a more detailed understanding of issues associated with dogs taking prescription medications, as well as owners’ concerns.

“As veterinarians, we have had some sense of the issues associated with dogs taking their prescriptions, but actually being able to quantify the results allows us to better understand the concerns of our clients and provide improved care for their pets”.

Owners of dogs suffering from chronic pain also expressed similar concerns about their pets rejecting their medication. Their top issues were:

  • 61% were concerned their pet will still be in pain.
  • 52% were concerned about their dog getting the proper dosage.
  • 38% were worried that the medication would not be as effective if their pet did not receive the full dose.

Sarilyn Johnson-Carter of Abbott Animal Health said: “According to this survey, nearly one-third of medications given for chronic conditions are given to dogs suffering from pain associated with conditions like osteoarthritis. These results demonstrate the level of concern amongst dog owners that, despite their best efforts, their cherished pets might still be suffering needlessly.”
