An electronic library of veterinary and scientific information relating to zoo and free-living wild animals has been made freely available, to support animal health and welfare.

WildproThe Wildpro multimedia website is an electronic encyclopaedia and library of data collated over 20 years. The website has evolved from an initiative started by Twycross chief executive officer Suzanne Boardman when she was a vet at the Zoological Society of London.

Having received a number of queries regarding animal health and veterinary care, Dr Boardman realised how difficult it was for wildlife professionals to access accurate information rapidly.

Originally Wildpro was only available via paid subscription but it was made freely available to wildlife professionals in developing countries in 2007 and, last month, became an open-access resource.

Dr Suzanne Boardman.Dr Boardman said: “There is no doubt that having this information freely available will change the way wildlife, captive and free-ranging, is treated and managed.

“This information resource encourages an approach to disease prevention and investigation, which considers the interaction between the animal host, the pathogen and the environment in producing either health or disease, and supports logical thinking and decision making.”
