toquinol has launched a new website to support the veterinary profession and dog owners in the management of epilepsy.

Epiphen OnlineThe veterinary pharmaceutical company has developed Epiphen Online to complement the existing monitoring aids and booklets provided to veterinary practices. This gives the best possible support to vets and patients during the complex process of stabilising and managing seizures.

The new online service enables owners to enter information easily. Vets can access records and essential data for use in prescribing an appropriate medication and management programme.

With approximately 3-5% of dogs suffering from idiopathic epilepsy (which accounts for 80% of epileptic seizures) the documentation of an animal’s history and activity is crucial in assessing the progression of the condition. It also provides invaluable information for diagnosis and the maintenance of effective therapeutic control.

Epilepsy is an inherited disorder in some breeds, including:

  • beagles,
  • dachshunds,
  • Keeshond,
  • German shepherd dogs, and
  • Belgian Tervuerens.

Dogs may start showing symptoms early in their lives, usually between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.

Symptomatic documentation and recording is essential for the best prognosis and management of seizures and of the owners’ expectations regarding the quality of life of their pet.
