Veterinary students at Nottingham University let their hair down at their Narnia themed fifth annual Vet Student Ball, which included a three course meal, four piece band, a DJ and an awards ceremony.

NarniaGuests attended a champagne reception at the veterinary school, where they were entertained by a magician, before being transported to the main banqueting suite, which they entered in true Narnia style – through a wardrobe and into a room decorated to look like a snow-covered forest.

The evening, which was described by the students as “a great success”, saw speeches from Vet Soc president Abi Jennings and senior social secretary Andrew Yale, followed by the annual awards ceremony.

Awards presented included the prestigious Tutor of the Year award, as voted for by all students at the school, which went to Liz Mossop, associate professor of veterinary education.

Students receiving individual achievement awards included good samaritan Sophie Rawlinson, marathon runner Rhys Owen, academic Emily Long, charity worker Hannah Bridger and long-serving AVS committee member Sophie Bagnall.

Vet Soc ballThe evening continued with entertainment from a four piece band and later a DJ. With plenty of great food and of course a tipple or two!

Dean Gary England said: “The vet student ball is one of the social highlights of the academic year for veterinary students and staff. Each year the organisers compete with the success of the previous year to make the ball bigger, better and more special.

“Once again the ball of 2013 was a huge success, and that is in no small part to the generosity of those that kindly sponsor this event; this year being Vets4Pets and Royal Canin.”

According to Vets4Pets, its involvement in the ball came as part of the continued work it does with Nottingham Vet School in regards to EMS programmes and sponsoring the year’s programme of events.
