John Barrowman has been named PetNet Celebrity Dog Owner of the Year for 2012, while Celia Hammond scooped the cat owner prize.

John Barrowman has been named PetNet Celebrity Dog Owner of the Year for 2012, while Celia Hammond scooped the cat owner prize.

Barrowman ended the clear winner as fans voted in big numbers at www.petnet.co.uk to show support for him and his three dogs – Harris, Charlie and Captain Jack.

Mr Barrowman said: “I am delighted to receive this award. My dogs play such an important role in my life and I am proud to promote responsible ownership.

“I will be donating my prize money to Dogs Trust. As its patron, I understand how incredibly hard they work to find new homes for stray and abandoned dogs.”

Celia Hammond was named Celebrity Cat Owner of the Year 2012. The 1960s model, who founded the Celia Hammond Animal Trust in 1986, edged out McFly’s Tom Fletcher.

Celia HammondShe said: “I am honoured to receive this award, but am even more delighted that our wonderful supporters came out in such force to ensure the trust benefited from this donation.

“This will enable us to help even more animals that we rescue from the streets and help low income pet owners have their pets treated.”

PetNet is the busiest online community for dog and cat owners and is endorsed by the BVA and NOAH.

Head of digital at PetNet Lisa Robb said: “From an original list of 82 nominees, 12 celebrities were shortlisted by our expert panel of judges and the overwhelming support of their fans has resulted in two very deserving winners.

“We are delighted that Dogs Trust and the Celia Hammond Animal Trust will receive £2,000 each plus a photo shoot, thanks to Venture Photography.”
