A new service has been created which puts practising vets in touch with a panel of veterinary experts for professional advice by email.
The Vet Counsel is the brainchild of veterinary surgeon Nichole Drury, who came up with the idea when she found herself increasingly dependent on external sources to deal with challenging cases.
She told Vetsonline: “With the credit crunch I am finding less of our uninsured clients are able to afford a referral so I am left to do the best I can. Although telephone advice for urgent cases is essential I find for non urgent cases email is a much more convenient method for getting advice. So I set up The Vet Counsel.”
The service, which is said to be the first of its kind in the UK, enables vets to access to a panel of 12 experts with specialist knowledge in a number of varied fields including cardiology, dermatology, oncology and equine soft tissue surgery. Due to the nature of the service, it is designed for non-urgent cases only.
