A team from the Guiseley and Redcar branches of White Cross Vets, accompanied by some of their dogs, completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge this month.

Spirits are high as the team take a break at Ribblehead. The vets and nurses participating on August 14 were James and Vanessa Wood, Rod and Lenka Beardshall, Dave GibsonHolly Roberts, Amanda Hatfield and Cate Titterton, who undertook the challenge to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and completed the route in less than 12 hours.

Explaining the choice of charities, Guiseley clinic director Mr Beardshall said: “We decided to raise money for multiple sclerosis research because the disease has touched the life of more than one staff member and also for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to help protect the beautiful area in which we are lucky enough to live.”

Recounting the challenge, he said: “The day started with an ascent up Pen-y-ghent in drizzle and low cloud which defied the weather forecast to continue well past mid-day. This together with the bogs made the first half of the walk heavy going and it was frustrating to find that the most waterproof pair of boots doesn’t keep the water out as your foot sinks shin deep into the mud.
The team reach the summit of Ingleborough.
“On reaching the top of peak two, Whernside, there were enough breaks in the cloud to give views over Morecambe Bay, and then as tiredness began to take over, some glorious weather kept us all going up the final and steepest ascent up Ingleborough.”

He added: “Special mention must be given to the two canine walkers – without whom it may not have been possible. Pip, the border terrier, enthusiastically tested the depths of the boggy bits, of which there were many, while the much larger Buddy provided a welcome pull up the steeper bits at strategic moments.”

  • The team set themselves a target of raising £1,000 and are close to acheiving their target. You can support them via their JustGiving page.
