Daredevil VNs from across the UK have successfully completed a tandem skydive to raise money for charity and improve awareness of the veterinary nursing profession.
Six brave VNs from across the UK have successfully completed a tandem skydive to raise money for charity and improve awareness of the veterinary nursing profession.
On April 16 veterinary nurses Vicky Couzens, Jenny Cook, Michelle Dickens, Leigh Martin, Gillian James and Kim Blowing jumped out of a plane with an instructor, exiting at 13,000ft over the sunny Nottinghamshire countryside.
She said: “I was a little worried because it would be my fault if people didn’t like it but it was amazing, I just want to do it again. I was screaming so much though!”
The ladies, one of whom had never been in an airplane before, were raising money for the Muir Maxwell Trust epilepsy charity and came together in support of a grassroots campaign to support the title of veterinary nurse and recognise the role of VNs in practice.
They were supported on the day by fellow VNs Caro Laithwaite and Tracey Plant and a host of family and friends.
Before her jump Michelle, from Martin Referrals in Warwickshire, said she was excited but nervous, but once she was down she said the experience was “fabulous”. She added: “I never thought I’d do anything like this – I’d love to do it again but maybe not too soon.”
Together the ladies have managed to raise more than £1,000 and Vicky urged any nurses and vets who would still like to donate to go online and support their good cause.
Vicky and co-organiser Caro are also planning another skydiving event for 2013 to “raise more money and more awareness” and encouraged both VNs and vets to pluck up the courage to join them.
“It wasn’t that terrifying after all and we want more people to come along next time,” urged Vicky. “It’s an experience not to be missed!”
