KC Dog, the Kennel Club’s campaign to promote responsible dog ownership and protect dog owners’ rights, is keen to highlight the good practice being adopted by Olney Town Council to promote a welcoming environment for both dog and non-dog owners living in the area.

Olney Town Council believe that dog control orders should be After receiving numerous complaints about dog fouling on the local recreation ground, the council has been working alongside members of the community to encourage responsible dog walking, rather than introducing dog control orders.

A representative from Olney Town Council commented: “Dog control orders should never be necessary and are an absolute last resort. The council is taking proactive steps to make sure that people and their dogs can have maximum access to Olney’s public spaces, and enjoy them responsibly. We are therefore working with contractors and members of the public to ensure that dog bins are conveniently positioned and continue to be properly monitored and emptied regularly.”

As part of the initiative to promote responsible dog walking, the town will be hosting a community dog walking event from 2pm on June 20. The event has been organised by a local dog walking group – Friendly Responsible Olney Dog Owners – and has received the full support of the local council.

The walk is open to all members of the public – dog owners and non-dog owners alike – and will follow a planned route around the town. The event will offer information and advice on responsible dog walking. Free copies of KC Dog’s “Walkies” dog access guide for England will also be distributed, and will be available upon request from the council after the event. Further details can be obtained by contacting Olney Town Council on 01234 711679 or info@olneytowncouncil.co.uk.

Caroline KiskoKennel Club communications director Caroline Kisko said: “The Kennel Club is delighted to see Olney taking such positive action to promote and encourage responsible dog ownership, rather than resorting to the threat of dog bans, fines or prosecution.

“Research shows that problems often arise simply due to lack of information. Dog owners are not always clear about where or how they should dispose of dog mess or how to deal with behavioural problems. By providing clear advice, Olney will be helping their residents to behave responsibly and save themselves the necessity of dealing with problems later.”

KC Dog is an information network, free to join, whose members benefit from news and information on dog control orders across the UK. Visit www.thekennelclub.org.uk/kcdog for further information.
