The 2011-2012 National Veterinary Services Karting Championship is now well underway with the first event being held on August 26 at Xtreme Karting in Edinburgh, with many veterinary professionals giving up their Friday evening to attend.
40 drivers were split into 10 teams (all given names of fast animals) who, after a 20 minute practice session, took on a 1.5 hour endurance race.
The race saw pole position change hands several times but, according to reports, it soon became apparent that it was a three-team race, between the Elks, the Lions and the Panthers.
Overall, there was a 15 lap difference between first and last place with the Edinburgh Elks achieving 1st place, with 155 laps within the time frame allowed.
The Elks team members are Jason Graham, Neil Laing, Jennifer King and Will Marshall – all from branches of the Clyde Veterinary Group – who automatically go through to the final in Milton Keynes on June 17, 2012.
Julie Godwin, marketing manager at NVS said: “It was a fantastic turnout and feedback was that everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The venue only opened in January this year so everything was brand new, including the karts, which made it even better for us spectators.
“As the championship was so well received last year we made the decision to increase the number of venues in locations that are hopefully more accessible to more people. I’m sure that this year’s events will be as well attended as last years, in fact, registrations are coming in thick and fast for future dates.”
