Cats Protection and Fort Dodge Animal Health have linked up to provide a series of free feline shelter medicine events across the UK.
The CPD days are designed to provide veterinary surgeons with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in this emerging area, covering commonly encountered subjects associated with rescue cats, such as disease, behaviour and preventive medicine.
Speakers include Tim Gruffydd-Jones, professor of feline medicine at the University of Bristol, who will deliver a presentation on updates in FIV/FeLV testing and Rachel Dean – former Fort Dodge feline fellow, now clinical associate professor at the University of Nottingham (and studying for a PhD at the Animal Health Trust) – will give an update on feline infectious disease.
Rachel Casey, of Cats Protection and senior lecturer in feline behaviour and welfare at the University of Bristol, will explore the behaviour of rescue cats; Mike Davies, Technical Services Manager at Fort Dodge Animal Health, will cover feline vaccination and Maggie Roberts, Cats Protection’s Director of Veterinary Services, will summarise the charity’s policies.
Mike Davies of Fort Dodge commented: “Shelter medicine is increasingly recognised as a specialist area, requiring particular knowledge and skills. The last series of CPD events we held with Cats Protection proved popular, so we’re delighted to be working with them again to help raise awareness of this important clinical area and to support the charity’s vital work in caring for the UK’s homeless cats.”
Maggie Roberts said: “The CPD Days are a great opportunity for Cats Protection and Fort Dodge Animal Health to share their skills and experience with veterinary surgeons to benefit the health and welfare of cats and kittens across the UK. They are useful and informative sessions, so I hope as many veterinary surgeons as possible attend.”
The dates of the CPD days are as follows:
20 October 2009 – Edinburgh Zoo, Edinburgh
1 December 2009 – Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool
2 February 2010 – Wetherby Racecourse, West Yorkshire
The CPD days are free, but a £10 donation to Cats Protection is requested to reserve your place. Fort Dodge Animal Health is a leading manufacturer and distributor of animal healthcare and veterinary products for large and small animals.
