A free disk, produced by Merial Animal Health and NADIS, is designed to give vets everything they need to run farmer meetings on the subject of calf pneumonia, as well as a variety of useful background information.
A free disk providing a variety of resources on calf pneumonia for vets has been produced by Merial Animal Health and the National Animal Disease Information Service (NADIS).
The disk is designed to give vets everything they need to run farmer meetings on the subject of calf pneumonia, as well as a variety of useful background information.
Past research has revealed that pneumonia is a real concern for all cattle farmers. Nearly a quarter of dairy farmers saw it as a threat to productivity (23%), but rated it behind TB, mastitis and BVD, while nearly four in ten (37%) beef farmers agreed that it was a threat, rating it second only to TB.
Disks are currently being sent out to practices throughout the UK, but are also available from Merial’s area business development managers.
Material for use at farmer meetings includes:
- A presentation from NADIS on calf pneumonia in beef herds
- A presentation from NADIS on housing
- A presentation from Merial giving an overview of calf pneumonia
- Quiz for farmers
- Video interviews with expert Alan Murphy (AHVLA), cattle vet Mike Thorne, and dairy farmer Nigel Smith
Additional resources include printable copies of a ‘Farmer Guide to Treating Pneumonia‘, abstracts from useful papers on calf pneumonia, and a more detailed interview with Alan Murphy aimed specifically at vets.
Brian Rice from Merial said: “We know that this kind of independent resource material is valued by practices and that’s why we have compiled this disk. We can also help practices in organising farmer meetings.”
