New guidance on rights for new parents or those looking to adopt has been made available to employees, employers and locums by the British Veterinary Association (BVA).

BVA guidance for parents and employersFollowing changes in national legislation, the BVA decided to launch Guidance on Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Rights for use by its members.

The guidance includes timelines for quick reference, plus health and safety advice, including a template risk assessment form. It also features a frequently asked questions section.

A number of new rules and regulations relating to maternity, paternity and adoption have been combined into what the association says is an “easy-to-read guide with short sections on each topic”.

Employees can find out when they need to tell their employer that they are pregnant, when maternity pay starts, all about paternity rights, what to do when they’re ready to return to work and much more.

Employers benefit from a reference tool that explains the processes they need to go through when a locum or other staff member tells them they are pregnant, as well as guidance about paternity and adoption rights.

And locums will be able to find out from the guidance document where they stand on maternity, paternity and adoption.

Bill ReillyBill Reilly, BVA past-president, chaired the members services sub-group that developed the document. He said: “This guidance tells everyone in the practice team what they need to know about pregnancy in the workplace.

“Developed with the help of human resources and legal experts, this guidance answers common questions, provides a great overview of what should happen when, as well as who has what rights and responsibilities.

“It is specifically tailored to the veterinary environment, so vets, vet nurses and practice managers should all find the clear advice useful,” Prof Reilly added.
