VN merit award logoThe first-ever BSAVA Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy VN Merit Award – due to be taught in Cardiff later this year – is already oversubscribed.

The other 2012 Merit Award – taking place in Glasgow – in anaesthesia and analgesia still has places.

BSAVA academic director Frances Barr said: “Veterinary nurses have an increasing desire to stretch their skills and expand their contribution to the clinical team, and the new awards will provide that opportunity.

“They deserve the support of the whole profession.”

The rehabilitation course has three taught days, with two on the anaesthesia course, and both awards feature two webinars and finish with an online assessment.

Commenting on the exam, Dr Barr told vetsonline: “It’s not formally accredited but nonetheless it’s going to be quite a rigorous assessment and hopefully will mean something, both to the individuals and their practices.”

Frances BarrShe added: “We are aiming to enable nurses to explore areas of particular interest to them with structured and focused CPD and I think the skills they will gain will let them go back to practice and widen their role – after doing the rehab courses nurses could go back and take a lead role in rehabilitation or running clinics.”

Dr Barr said the association is already planning two new courses for next year in British wildlife and surgery and appealed to VNs for more ideas.

“If there is a demand for the courses we want to carry on doing them and we’re interested to hear from people about future topics,” she said.

Both 2012 courses cost £480 including VAT for BSAVA members and £720 including VAT for non-members. Email courses@bsava.com or visit www.bsava.com to find out more. Download the VN Merit Award brouchure.
