Animal protection group Fundación FAADA has started an international online campaign asking the US pop act to pull its sponsorship of Spanish TV show Involución for exploiting a chimpanzee.

The Black Eyed Peas have been longtime supporters of PETA and have spoken out against animal cruelty in the past.

The Black Eyed PeasIn just a few days, more than 8,000 people have signed a petition on Actuable.es, a popular action platform and partner of Change.org in Spain, asking the Black Eyed Peas to take a stand against animal abuse.

An English-version of the petition has also been started on Change.org.

Involución, which airs on the Spanish network Antena3, uses a chimpanzee in its program to act out challenges with the contestants. Fundación FAADA says that behaviors like the ones the chimpanzee is forced to perform on the show are unnatural and are achieved through abusive training methods.

Chimpanzees used in the entertainment industry often suffer physical and psychological effects from their captivity. The chimpanzee was provided to the TV show by Hollywood trainer Steve Martin, whose company is reported to have been cited repeatedly by the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Stephanie Feldstein, animals editor for Change.org, said: “Chimpanzees used in the entertainment industry lead miserable lives. Fundación FAADA is giving Noah and other exploited chimpanzees like him a voice. Thousands of activists have joined them in asking the Black Eyed Peas to use their celebrity to help stop chimpanzee suffering.”

Fundación FAADA met with Antena3 to educate the network on the suffering of chimpanzees used for entertainment but, despite their efforts (as well as thousands of messages from the public, requests from nearly 100 animal protection groups and the voice of world-renowned wildlife experts and primatologists, including Dr Jane Goodall) the show was aired as planned, with regular appearances from the chimpanzee and with a special ad stating: “The concert of Black Eyed Peas sponsors this show.”

Fundación FAADA is appealing to the band, which has previously participated in animal protection campaigns, to reject their sponsorship of Involución and take a stand against the suffering of chimpanzees used in the entertainment industry.
