A team of motorbiking vets will be hitting the road on a UK TOUR to raise funds for the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT).
On their journey the team will visit South Mimms, Dublin, Belfast, Scotland and Penrith.
Attendees can enjoy a series of CPD-accredited lectures covering a host of topics – from new treatments for sarcoids and emerging infectious neurological diseases, to implications for eye problems at pre-purchase examination. Owners can attend lectures on melanomas, strangles, equine wounds and colic, among others.
All funds raised will help equip the GHDT’s new vet centre in Makasutu, which was built with funds raised via the 2014 tour.
Prof Knottenbelt said: “We need the help of good people to support our efforts to equip the GHDT education and clinical centre. It is a vital development in the education of vets, owners, children of the Gambia and surrounding countries.”
The new centre will consist of an equine hospital, stabling for 25 inpatients, offices, a visitor centre and lecture room, together with accommodation for volunteers, students and staff. It will also be used to train Gambian and overseas vets, and provide support for working animals and their owners in the coastal region of the Gambia.
Prof Knottenbelt added: “If there was ever any horse or donkey that needed the best available veterinary care it would surely be the one upon whom the lives and livelihoods of a family with two children depend. It would be great to see a full house at the horsepower event this June. It is a unique event, with fun and educational for everyone. “Anyone who is even vaguely interested in horses can come along. Your help and participation will make a difference. Please support us in whatever way you can.”
