Police have confirmed an 11-month-old girl was taken to hospital in Blackburn where she died after being mauled by a pet dog.
A 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and are in police custody.
The baby was not at her home address when she was attacked in Emily Street, Blackburn (pictured right). Police seized the animal and are carrying out tests to establish the breed of the dog.
A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said: “The baby was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital but sadly passed away a short time later.
“The dog has been seized from the address by police. Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries at the scene and investigate the circumstances of what has happened.
“A 26-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman have both been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and are currently in police custody.”
Detective Superintendent Simon Giles said: “This is a tragic incident and specially trained officers are offering support to the wider family. A full investigation is underway.”
The attack comes less than a year after the death of Jade Anderson, 14, who died on March 26 at a house in Atherton, near Wigan, after being attacked by four dogs.
