Owners can now be confident that homeopathic medicines can be effective for common canine and feline conditions in many animals, according to the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons (BAHVS).

Association claims proof of homeopathic effectivenessThe association’s claim follows the publication of a new clinical outcomes survey (said to be the largest-ever study of its type) that identified a number of clinical conditions in dogs and cats that “may be promising targets for future research in veterinary homeopathy“.

Twenty-one homeopathic vets
in the UK recorded data from their patients over a 12-month period and collected information from a total of 1,500 dogs and 400 cats.

In cats, a total of 117 different chronic medical conditions were treated with homeopathy, although the most frequently treated feline conditions overall were dermatitis, renal failure, overgrooming, arthritis and hyperthyroidism.

In dogs, 301 different chronic medical conditions were treated, although those most commonly recorded were dermatitis, arthritis, pyoderma, colitis and fear.

By owners’ assessments (graded on a 7-point scale, ranging from −3 to +3), a moderate or major improvement was reported overall for 68% of dogs and 63% of cats.

The BAHVS claims the study should offer UK pet owners confidence in homeopathic medicines, although the authors simply concluded that a programme of controlled research in homeopathy for frequently-treated feline and canine conditions is clearly indicated.

  • Results of the study were published as “Homeopathic prescribing for chronic conditions in feline and canine veterinary practice” by Robert Mathie, Elizabeth Baitson, Lise Hansen, Mark Elliott and John Hoare, in issue 99 of Homeopathy, published by Elsevier.

NOTICE OF RETRACTION:

The BAHVS would like to retract the following statements on the Vetsonline website:

  • Association claims proof of homeopathic effectiveness
  • Owners can now be confident that homeopathic medicines can be effective for common canine and feline conditions in many animals according to the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons.

“We would like to assert that the study concluded that a programme of controlled research in homeopathy for frequently treated feline and canine conditions is clearly indicated.”
