Stand-up comedian Alun Cochrane will host the 2011 Petplan Veterinary Awards.The awards, which are presented in association with Veterinary Business Development, the parent company of Vetsonline, take place at Birmingham Town Hall on the evening of March 31.

Alun has been a nominee for the best newcomer prize at the Perrier Comedy Awards and best compère and best breakthrough act at the Chortle Awards. Previous compères include Michael McIntyre, Alistair McGowan, Jason Manford, and Frankie Boyle.

Anticipating the event, he said: “I’m really looking forward to hosting what I hear will be a very glamorous and unforgettable evening.”

It will be the 12th annual Petplan awards, which recognises veterinary surgeons, VNs and receptionists who go beyond the call on duty in their work. There is also an award for veterinary practice of the year. During the evening and, in conjunction with The Veterinary Business Journal, VPMA and SPVS, a Practice Manager of the Year award will also be presented.

Petplan’s marketing manager Alison Andrew said: “Veterinary staff are often the unsung heroes of a community and the Petplan Veterinary Awards are an opportunity to recognise the outstanding work and great dedication they have to our pets. Having Alun as our compère for the night this year will be incredible. I’m sure he will keep everyone highly entertained on what is sure to be another glittering awards ceremony.”
