Renal disease in dogs and cats is a very serious condition. Caught early, it responds well to treatment but if left untreated, the disease can progress to a bleaker outlook. The role of the veterinary nurse is vitally important in the supportive treatment of the disease, the patient and the owner.

This course will give nurses a good understanding of the disease processes and therapeutic options for its treatment. We will cover all aspects of the nursing care and laboratory techniques used in the treatment of the renal failure including the following:

  • Differences between chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury
  • Causes of pre, intra and post renal azotaemia
  • Fluid therapy for the renal failure
  • Potassium therapy
  • Blood pressure measurement and the management of hypertension
  • Laboratory techniques
  • Urinalysis
  • Urine protein: creatinine ratio
  • Urine culture
  • Dietary management
