About this course

When dyspnoeic patients are presented in practice, the cause is often initially unclear; presenting a challenge for the whole veterinary team. In these situations it is essential that, as veterinary nurses, we are clear about how to support the patient during the process of triage, diagnosis and treatment by the veterinary surgeon.

This course will recap the basic concepts of the dyspnoeic patient, before introducing new ideas on the pathophysiology, clinical signs, physical examination findings, radiographic and ultrasonographic changes and treatment options. You will look at the nursing and medical management of the acutely dyspnoeic patient, including:

  • Triage and rapid assessment
  • Intravenous access techniques
  • Methods of oxygen supplementation
  • Thoracentesis
  • Thoracic drain placement
  • Pericardiocentesis
  • Imaging techniques

Demonstrations of commonly performed techniques by nurses, e.g. oxygen tube placement, will also be performed.
