The acute abdomen is a common complaint in small animals and refers to sudden severe abdominal pain. It can arise from many causes including gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), ruptured splenic mass or an intestinal foreign body, but general anaesthesia is almost always required to diagnose and treat the cause. This afternoon will, with the aid of case studies, discuss aspects of the acute abdomen including causes, patient preparation and stabilization, monitoring, nursing support and recovery from anaesthesia.
