Complete anorexia, lasting more than a few days, can be extremely dangerous to a cat’s health and lead to unwanted consequences including hepatic lipidosis. Sustained poor appetite is common with many chronic illnesses and can contribute to worsened health status through reducing immune function, slowing wound healing and other complications.

This lecture will cover the following topics:

  • The consequences of anorexia in cats, including laboratory markers of malnutrition
  • Assessing energy requirements in clinical patients
  • Tactics to encourage voluntary food intake
  • Appetite stimulants – what options are there and which are safest/most effective?
  • Assisted feeding – case selection, pros and cons of different tubes, step by step guide to naso-oesophageal and oesophagostomy tube placement
  • Case examples will be used to illustrate the points made
