Not enough red cells, not enough blood clots………
Anaemia is a relatively common problem affecting dogs and cats and some of these patients present as emergencies. This course will start by discussing the different types of anaemia and how to approach the anaemic patient. We will then consider transfusion medicine in the context of the anaemic patient. The second part of the course will focus on coagulation, reviewing some of the basic physiology and haemostatic testing before going on to discuss transfusion therapy for clotting disorders.

The day will end with some case scenario discussions covering topics such as:

  • Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA)
  • Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT)
  • Rodenticide intoxication
  • Canine angiostrongylosis (lungworm)
