Gastric dilation volvulus – pre-operative stabilisation and post-operative care
About this course
This presentation will focus on the pre and post-operative aspects of management of gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) in dogs. We will discuss the pros and cons of the use of different types of fluid, how and when you should undertake gastric decompression and factors that may influence how and when you anaesthetise your patient for surgery. There will be discussion of some of the published evidence base and how or if this should influence your management of the GDV cases you see. Post-operative management can be challenging and we will discuss the common complications encountered with GDV and the steps that can be taken to prevent, and treat them. Basic surgical principles will be covered although there will only be limited discussion of the surgical techniques that can be used to manage these cases.
