Disease risks posed by parasites to cats, dogs and their owners is a rapidly evolving field with long recognised pathogens expanding their geographic range and new ones emerging. The risk to UK pets and owners comes both from endemic parasites extending their distribution and prevalence such as lungworm and Echinococcus granulosus, as well as the possible entry of exotic parasites and their vectors from the continent. These include the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the eye worm Thelazia and the tongue worm Linguatula serrata. This course will discuss the potential disease syndromes posed by these parasites, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. It will also consider general principals that can be put in place for early recognition of exotic diseases in travelled pets and practical parasite control advice for pets domestically, being imported into the UK or travelling abroad.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Endemic parasitic diseases and their expanding distribution
  • Risk of emerging parasitic diseases from abroad and associated disease syndromes
  • Treatment and prevention of common emerging parasitic diseases
  • Early recognition of exotic diseases in the travelling pet
  • Parasitic control for pets travelling abroad or being imported into UK
